What Causes Arthritis Of the Foot & Ankle?

What Are The Symptoms of Arthritis of the Foot & Ankle?

In the foot and ankle, the most common symptoms of arthritis are pain, swelling, and stiffness. In early arthritis, pain is most prominent in initial activities after periods of long rest like getting out of bed in the morning. Often, patients will complain that their joints are stiff and painful and need to “warm-up” before feeling better. As arthritis progresses, the pain and stiffness will continue during activities of the day eventually worsening to limiting patients from many daily activities.

In advanced arthritis cases, the bones may shift position in the joint leading to deformities like collapse foot arch or a shifting of the heel or ankle out of alignment. This malalignment often causes much pain and difficulty in walking.

What Are The Treatment Options For Arthritis Of the Foot & Ankle?

Treatments considerations are numerous depending on the joint in the foot and ankle and the severity of arthritis. In cases where joints have severe arthritic changes, the most common surgical option is joint fusion. Most joints in the foot are amenable to fusion. The goal of the fusion is to convert a painful joint to a solid bone creating stability and eliminating pain.

The ankle and great toe joint are two joints where joint replacement has proven effective and many represent an alternative to fusion.
